Six people spent Thursday night on the roof of Chilton County High School for a good cause.

Among them were CCHS Principal Greg DeJarnett, Vice Principal Jim Shannon, and Chilton County’s top school official, Superintendent Keith Moore. They were joined by teachers Don Dorminey and David Moore, and former student Charlie Dorminey.

Shannon promised to spend a night on the roof if the school met its Relay for Life fundraising goal of $3,000. The school’s team ended up doing much more than that, raising much more than $8,000. For every $1,000 raised in addition to the goal, another person volunteered to go up.

The entire student body watched as the men ascended the ladder shortly after 2 p.m. After announcing the goal, DeJarnett led everyone in shouting, “Great job, CCHS!”

“Raising money for Relay did several things for us,” DeJarnett said. “It helped us to raise money for a great cause, it taught our students the necessity of community service, and it helped our school spirit.”

The school organized several fundraisers for Relay, including a faculty versus seniors basketball game, a faculty versus seniors softball game, faculty lunches, and a cheesecake auction. According to teachers Rick McKee and Mary Caver, it was a team fundraising record.

DeJarnett thanked the faculty, staff, student body, cheerleaders and Team Captain Jaime Bee for a job well done.

“Our philosophy is that cancer has touched everyone’s life in some way,” he said.
