Thorsby High School’s Makinley Turner is this week’s athlete of the week after her performances during the week of April 19-25. Turner rounded into great form for the Rebels across their final two games of the regular season, starting on April 22 against Prattville Christian Academy. Thorsby lost the game 4-1, and Turner gave up four runs, but was only charged with one after errors led to baserunners. She gave up just three hits and struck out eight batters.

Turner put together arguably her best game of the season on April 23 against Shelby County High School, dueling with the other pitcher to a 0-0 tie after nine innings. The senior threw eight and one-third innings giving up just one hit, and she struck out 19 of the 26 batters she faced. Thorsby advanced to the AHSAA Class 2A State Softball Tournament last season, and with Turner controlling the circle well at the end of the season, it bodes well for the Rebels to make a return trip to states.

Honorable mention: Mallie Harrison, Chilton County High School

Mallie Harrison is usually the talk for her pitching, but she contributed heavily at the plate for the Tigers during the week. The sophomore launched three home runs during the week’s action with two against Prattville High School on the road to lift the Tigers to a 5-3 win, and the other against Jemison High School on April 23.
