Nine Republicans and two Democrats have qualified to run for local offices, according to the Chilton County Probate Judge’s Office.

As of Monday, Dave Hayden, Larry Raines and Tommy Glasscock have qualified to run for superintendent of education on the GOP ticket. Jason Griffin is the only democratic candidate for superintendent.

Republican candidates for Chilton County Sheriff include incumbent Kevin Davis, former sheriff Billy Wayne Fulmer, Ronnie Gilbert and John Shearon. Terry Wilson has qualified to run as a Democrat.

Both Davis and Gilbert have switched party affiliation. Davis was elected as a Democrat in 2006.

In the race for Chilton County Coroner are Republican candidates Paul Brooks and incumbent Randy Yeargan. As of Monday, no Democrats had qualified for the office of coroner.

Chilton County Democratic Club chairman Bobby Martin partly attributed the low turnout to the increased cost of campaigning.

“It’s going about like I expected,” Martin said.

Chilton County Republican Party chairwoman Ann Glasscock said she was pleased with the turnout and the party interest.

The last day for qualifying is Friday, April 2, 2010. All required paperwork must be completed and fees paid in full by 5 p.m.

Qualifying fees are $1,050 for sheriff, $1,910 for superintendent and $186 for coroner. The fees represent 2 percent of each office’s current annual salary.
