Williams Company and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama were the two top contributors during Chilton County United Way’s 2009-2010 campaign.

Williams Transcontinental Gas Pipeline Company’s Billingsley station contributed more than $31,000 to the organization through a benefit golf tournament, employee contributions and matching money from the company.

Both companies, among all other contributors, were recognized Tuesday during the annual appreciation luncheon. In January, United Way reached and surpassed its goal of $200,000.

“We just appreciate every last one of our contributors because without them we definitely would not be able to reach our goal,” United Way Board of Directors chairman Curtis Smith said.

Local public schools were also recognized for raising more than $2,000 through Dollar Day for United Way. Among these, Jemison Elementary raised the largest amount.

Plaques were given to representatives of each contributor, and certificates were handed out to individuals who supported United Way throughout the year.

“Overall, it’s been a good year,” Smith said. “With the economy like it is, we were a little fearful, but thankfully when times are hard, people seem to give a little more.”

Smith also took time to thank those who work directly with the organization year in and year out.

“I would like to thank our board members, our campaign chairman Bobby Martin, campaign coordinator Gwyn Loyd, and office secretary Fran McClane for their work,” he said.
