Whether you’re driving two miles or 200 miles, proper car seat restraints are important — especially when it comes to children.

The Jemison Police Department wants to stress this importance to the public through two officers who are specially trained as child passenger safety technicians.

Officers Tera Mayfield and Floyd Glass recently concluded a three-day certification course hosted by Safe Kids Worldwide through the National Child Passenger Safety Program. The certification will allow the officers to inspect and install child safety seats as a public service for the people of Jemison.

“There is nothing more valuable in traffic and motorist safety than the protection of small kids,” Jemison Police Chief Shane Fulmer said. “It’s tragic and disturbing how often we see small kids, including infants, that are not secured in some type of child restraint.”

Fulmer welcomes the public to stop by the office or contact Mayfield or Glass to make arrangements for demonstrations. Either officer can assist parents in the correct technique for installing a child car seat.

The officers are also available to inspect car safety seats to see that they are properly installed.

“I also have information available to the public from the Alabama Head Injury Foundation and the Car Seats for Kids program for those that may be on a limited income and that may be eligible for a free car seat,” Fulmer added.
