Jemison Council to replace leaky roof

Jemison city officials want to replace a City Hall roof that has leaked on several occasions.

The City Council met in a special called meeting Monday night to reject bids on a new roof because they failed to meet the city’s specifications.

“The roof has begun to leak bad, and we want to repair it with a different style roof,” Mayor Eddie Reed said. “The flat roof that was put on about 15 years ago has leaked about four times, and it is becoming expensive.”

The council is proposing a pitched metal design that would encourage water runoff. The estimated cost is not known at this time.

The council also voted to move a sewage lift station from Battle Street to the Ivie Childress Road area “to meet the needs of more people,” Reed said.

He added that the station had to be moved because the city could not locate a deed for the property on which it currently sits. Also, the residents who gave up land for the station to be moved will receive city service in exchange for the land.

The next regular Jemison City Council meeting is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m.
