Bojangles' may build new restaurants here
Published Friday, March 20, 2009
The chicken and biscuits chain Bojangles’ has announced plans to open 25 new restaurants across Central Alabama, with as many as three possibly going in Chilton County.
Clanton Economic Development Director Rick Russell confirmed that the company is in the process of getting land rezoned on Highway 31 South. The parcel in question is the former location of Mims House of Flowers.
“Nothing is definite yet,” Russell said, adding that the company has not applied for a building permit.
While an e-mail from the company hinted at intentions to open restaurants in Jemison and Maplesville, those intentions could not be confirmed. Maplesville Mayor Kurt Wallace said he had not been contacted by Bojangles’. Jemison Mayor Eddie Reed could not be reached for comment, as city representatives were in Washington, D.C. this past week.
Any new restaurants in the Chilton County area would be part of a multi-year plan to develop the Birmingham market through a combination of company- and franchisee-owned locations.
Four new restaurants are planned to open in the region by the end of 2009, with the first two scheduled to open by mid-summer in Northport and Clinton, respectively.
“We are thrilled to make public the fact that Bojangles’ has a robust growth plan in one of the great, dynamic markets in the country,” said Eric Newman, Executive Vice President of Development for Bojangles’ Restaurants, Inc. “It is the perfect place for us to share the best food available for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with an emphasis on quality and value.”
In addition to Shelby County (Birmingham), Bojangles’ will be focusing its growth in Chilton, Bibb, Blount Calhoun, Cherokee, Clay, Coosa, Cullman, Etowah, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Marion, Pickens, St. Clair, Shelby, Talladega, Tuscaloosa, Walker and Winston counties.
The anticipated business development indicates that Bojangles’ and its franchisees will infuse many millions of dollars into Central Alabama’s economy through local investments. Once complete, the expected 25-plus locations together will employ at least 1,000 people.
“We are proud to bring our distinctive and flavorful menu offerings — made-from-scratch breakfast biscuit sandwiches, Bojangles’ Classic Cajun Chicken, Dirty Rice, Cajun Pintos and legendary iced tea — to the area,” Newman added.
Bojangles’ has proven itself to be an attractive opportunity for franchisees and area developers.
“While our recipe for success is deeply rooted in food quality and innovative store design, it is our proven operational processes and systems that make Bojangles’ such an attractive franchise opportunity,” Newman said.

I sure would like to see a good seafood restaurant in this area. Not a chain, but something like Corkey Bells in Cocoa FL or Dixie Crossroads in Titusville FL. Both of those are afordable and very good. Oh well!

man i love Bojangles, best chicken and biscuits money can buy on the fast food line.
kw, that remark you made about (jobs drop outs can count on) that sounds kind of like your looking down on others less fortunate than your self, but let me offer to you a little life lesson, life can put you in the back seat at any second, and it don't care how much education you have or how much money and how many material possessions you own. in a split second life can take away your hopes and dreams and even the very desire for your mere existence, And rest assure when we leave this walk of life we are not going to be measured for our education and our success in life. but in how we conducted our life for gods purpose and his will. so as the born again christian you profess to be, try encouraging someone to better them selves through education rather than critisizing them for the lack thereof. and remember a lot of the things you and i enjoy on a daily basis were the ideas and inventions of uneducated men.

kw, hope that didn't sound harsh on my part, no offence to you, but i think you should take notice of how your statement sounds. maybe you meant it to sound that way, i hope not. And while i do not condone dropping out of school at any rate, i do understand that people have different reasons for doing the things they do in life. some by choice and some without choice.

Someone mentioned the old Hardee's building? I kinda wish Krystal would consider setting up shop there.

Well, kw ... you already got put in "time out" and the day hasn't even got started good yet. Looks like the (Dr.) is back in town from a 3-day hiatus. We surely will be enlightened by days end.
I think Clanton has more fast food joints per capita than the rest of the State. Yeah kw, we'll see an increase in "to go" boxes, paper bags, used condiment packs, and cups/straws on the road sides. You seen the McDonald's "filet-o-fish "commercial?" I can see a new chicken commercial in the works now, "Give me back that chicken wang ... give me that wang!"

some of these comments really are disheartening...these are jobs, so why complain...chilton county has great potential to attract some high quality places as well, but when you travel the back roads and those close to the interstates, they're pretty nasty..trash all over the place and the people in abundance here that don't mind throwing their waste out the window...and the way some of these comments are worded, well, those with the money that might happen to read your comments might be skeered off..truly, chilton county is prime for lots of things, but is that what is being projected to those who have the investments to do it?

besides that, you're not being forced to eat there, and if you can't control yourself, then drive 15 miles north to crappy barrel restaurant, or better yet, go way up north to texas roadhouse, which has GREAT food for GREAT prices...

Can we all agree to help with the growth of Chilton County? If the business is legal and can be supported by the citizens here, then the employment of anyone is considered potential growth. A comment was posted here last week about a construction worker who was out of a job going to work at Subway. I would not start to assume he was uneducated or a drop out. Many less fortunate due to layoffs are being forced to take jobs in areas where the hourly rate is much less such as fast food, chain stores etc ... The minimum hourly wage is actually more than the just over 200.00 a week a person can make on unemployment. People are at a loss of employment in which they made more than the bottom rate and are in line to take these jobs for survival. If we keep going financially at this rate, chicken and biscuits may be all we can afford. At least we are talking about providing jobs for those without. If we continue to belittle our community and speak of it with such negativity we will never find growth potential. We still have the freedom to eat where and what we want if it can be afforded. If someone lost their job today ... and Bojangles had just opened and needed workers, what would the option be? Draw unemployment or get in line to find a job making more than unemployment? Companies are trying to locate and open businesses in desirable marketable areas. If we want to grow here, volunteer to help educate and be positive. Then maybe, we will see seafood and steak places willing to move into our community. Postive examples eventually become the strong hold in communities.

Not ANOTHER chicken restaurant! We need that like we need another Mexican restaurant. Has anybody else heard that Chick Filet is moving to the Clover Leaf whenever they can pick up all the hypodermic needles?

I would love to see Chick fil A come to Clanton. We really need something besides Jacks at the 219.

Imagine that. Our whole economy saved by a chicken joint. Or two or three. Just one salmonella outbreak from total disaster.

i don't think (chick fil a) has the time or interest in picking up all the hypodermic needles, getbizi...

it is the community that allows and even perpetuates the 'blight'...the jack's at 219 is, sadly, a bit of an example of that...it takes WAY TOO LONG to get an order, and it's not always easy to understand what SHOULD BE common english....

Please, no more food joints! We've got plenty! Give us something to do, maybe a movie theatre or something!

why would you give them 10.52 for a meal that cost 5.48?
that would give you 4 pennies back... They would look at you and look at the register wondering why you didn't give them another penny if you wanted a nickel back... before you rag on those that work in fast food learn to figure your change better!

If we get another chicken restaurant I hope it's BUFFALO WILD WINGS. We need some decent hot wings around that are reasonably priced.

I had some wings a few years ago out Hwy. 82 in Tuscaloosa. It was in a small shopping plaza on the way to Moundville. Can't remember the name of the place. It was Wing (something). They were "crisp" and a lot of meat. Not alot of fat skin that is on most I have tried, especially the ones from PIZZA HUT. "Where's the chicken?" I can't handle the wangs at KFC,either. Most of the ones I bit into had that black junk that looked like dried blood all in it. Can't do that, Kemosape!

My favorite chicken place is Hooters. They have good chicken. Drumettes in 911 sauce, breaded, curley fries and a pitcher of beer. Um, Um, Um, that's tasty! I think I just flung a craving on myself.

We need another chicken place like we need another gas station, bank and pharmacy. Everytime I see another building going up, you can bet it's either one of those. I live down in Verbena where there is no place to eat except Stuckey's/Dairy Quenn and it personally is not my favorite place to go. I sure wish someone would open up a Krystal's or a place like Golden Corral Buffet and Grill. There are so much land to build on down here. We would actually be happy with Jack's. Why don't we have places like Applebee's, Oh Charlie's, Ruby Tuesday's, Outback, Long Horn, or Ryan's in Clanton. We mostly travel to Prattville or Millbrook. If you want some great mexican food try El Jalepeno in Millbrook.....WOW......it's worth the drive. It's located in the Food World shopping center, UCR(u can rent ) is also in that shopping center. We love it. (hot-n-spicy Burrito)...YUMMY

How many more chicken and burger joints are gonna go under in Clanton before these companies realize that we are saturated with those already? We need a great restaurant that serves a variety of good food. It doesn't have to be a swanky place like Shula's and the like. I'd be satisfied with a place like you would see on Guy Fieri's "Diners, Drive-Inns & Dives" on the Food Network. Lots of those places have chefs that really know how to cook and season food properly and their prices are reasonable. There's more to good food than slinging a hunk 'o meat on a grill and flipping it. Preparation and knowing the correct seasonings to use play a big part in great tasting food. As far as the people that work at these fast food places, most of them seem like they are in a daze. I went to the local "What-a-Burger" recently, ordered 2 burgers and 2 medium fries. Out comes my sack 'o food and no fries. I called this to the attention of the person that brought the burgers and she said "I'm sorry, I didn't even look at the receipt." DUH!!! Total lack of concern. Couldn't care less if they do a good job or not. Just there to draw a check. I say with today's economy especially, if you've got a job, do it to the best of your ability. If you can't do that-then go home and let someone who gives a hoot have your job. My two cents. Thanks.

ok,ok,ok
There IS more to life than fast-food! KW, I DO know what you were saying regarding the staff in many of these places. As the saying goes: work there because you HAVE to, not because you don't have the education to do anything else...better yet, if you want to work there :OWN it!
Wasn't there an article in the Advertiser a couple of weeks ago about healthier food for kids in the schools?
Fried Chicken and Biscuits sounds fantastic, but - how much /how often? One - the cost can add up/ Second: so can the fat and calories!

Back to the story, AHEM! I have heard tell, the reason the Clanton area doesn't get the "name brand restaurants" (restaurants, not fast food joints), is because of a certain "group" of "citizens" that make it virtually impossible for these businesses to come to Clanton, due to "their" business interests already in place.
Posted by urentitled2myopinion (anonymous) on March 22, 2009 at 11:08 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I too have always been told that certain people did not want such restaurants coming to clanton and taking away their customers. Not to mention some such restaurants have BARS!! Shame on us if we would like to eat in such a place. Because if it is there you know everyone is going to drink??! Give us all a break from the drive out of town and let Clanton have a nice place for friends to eat dinner and visit . Those who are drinkers are going to drink and those who don't still won't. But we could get a decent meal close to home .

My 17 year old nephew is becoming a Culinary Chef. He will be going to Italy this summer on internship. My sister and her family live in Washington state. But when I asked my nephew where he would open a restruant at he said, You guys in Alabama could really use a good meal. LoL....I'm going up there this June for his graduation. I will let ya'll know how good his food is. But as for the Theatre, I think it would be great. Even if they can't open a huge Cinema, I would be happy with a $.99 Theatre. Does anyone remember the one in Prattville, it played movies that just came out on DVD. I thought it was great. Cheap date though but at least we had somewhere dark to go and smooch......I'm way out of my teenage years but I know my kids would like it. And maybe me and my husband of 14 years would go to smooch too. Ok I'm only 32 I'm not that old.....I just feel old.....

I was not implying that Bojangles is a decent place or not a decent place to eat. I was agreeing with everyone else that we need other restaurants to come to Clanton besides fast food joints. I was being facetious with the bar comment.( Iam sure shoegal can explain what that means to the rest of us) I hope to see Clanton get a nice place to have a decent meal besides your own table. Somewhere were there is more on the menu than burgers and burritos.

I have an idea........since there is a trash problem near the fast food restaurants. Let's get the folks that need to work off their fines up there. That would solve that problem. HECK We could beautify the entire county if we made people (the ones that are really able to WORK and don't) for the help they get from the government. Exempting the people who really deserve the help like the elderly and disabled. Sorry a little off subject but on a rampage.

And I remember when Charlie B Cox aka145 was a pig trail. Also where Cattlemans is was the Dary Lane (Ithink thats what it was called) and was dirt parking all around it . A trailer Sales was where Jacks is now .And a Hydro Ponic tomato growing place there also.Booser's or something like that.OH and Whites Auto store was across from Westen Auto on the corner .

Another eatery still standing and doing business is the Dari Delite next to the hardware store. I remember the two water fountains attached to the north side of the building, one marked "white" and the other marked "black". After the fountains were removed, you could still see the silhouette's of the fountain's where the paint stopped up until just a few years ago. I also remember the pool hall next to Western Auto. There was a sign hanging above the entrance that said "White's Only". Come a long way, baby.

I guess this might let you folks know how old I am but even before Barron's restaurant it was called "Bob's" restaurant. This is what's now the Chrysler building at Stokes. I also remember when White's Auto was located on the corner (the present location of Pete's repair shop) in downtown Clanton, before being destroyed by fire. This was prior to the location next to Sears and Bargain Town. You could also get a good Bar-B-Que at Driver's located across 31 from what is now Goose Pond Park. They would even bring your food to the car on these little trays that hung on to the door glass. How cool, I thought, as a kid.

I hope this isn't a private conversation. The resturant was called Easterlings. At least the last one that was there that I remember. A lot of things have changed in the years that I have lived here. The park that was in the cotton mill village is gone now and Sager Glove was there for years and now it's out of business, don't know what is there now. The cotton mill is still there, sorta, it Wayne Industries now. The village is still there although a lot of the house have been torn down. Northside Baptist Church is still there. I remember going to the Drive In as a kid, and Basil Clark would get on the speaker between movies and say "Come on down to the concession stand and get yourself a orange 32 ounce Belly Washer, Drink what ya can, and wash you feet in the rest". Saw all of the Walking Tall movies there. Mid 70's I guess

dr, the skating rink is still here. Still very popular b'day party place. The auto dealership is stokes, and it's still there also. I love reading all of these blogs today, brings back a lot of memories. Someone mentioned Mim's pond earlier. I loved that place. Went there many, many, many times. But, I have a pool now, and would never let my kids swim at a place like that. But, again, I loved it then. I have swam in much worse and survived.

I remember the Drive-in too. Intermission BINGO-when someone would come to claim their prize, Basil would say, "Where Ya From?" Then he'd say "All the way from Clanton, Alabama to play Bingo with us tonight!" He was a hoot! Nice fella too. Thanks for the memories guys. I gotta get back to work.

dr, Yes a pool is still in the same place, but it's a different pool. They covered in the big round kiddie pool, and made the slope not so big, and put in an olympic size l-shaped pool with a small wading pool next to it. It's nice, but I wish they had kept the round kiddie pool. Lot's of memories there too.

Well, I've never posted a comment here, but have always loved reading the things you guys put here. But now that you are reminiscing about Mims' Pond, I just can't help but chime in. Nothing' was better after a long morning of picking peaches than hitting Mims' Pond around 2 oclock. I remember one time I had a white swimsuit with strawberries on it and after a day in the pond, it was yellow with strawberries on it.
Do ya'll remember the candy counter in the five and dime store? I can't remember what the specific name of that place was, but they had this glass counter with all kinds of candy that was sold by the pound.
I live in Alabaster now and you guys are making me think about things I haven't thought of in years.
Anyone graduate from CCHS in 1982?

auntnay, I graduated in 1986. I'm not sure, but I think the five and dime store was called Elmores. Someone mentioned earlier. Yes, Mim's pond was great. I, too, helped my Daddy pick peaches, then Momma would load up her kids and our cousins and take us to Mim's. It was great

Yep, the one next to the old Rexall store is the one I'm talking about. The floors were beautiful and it always smelled of polish. I loved that store. Thanks for sharing everyone!

Was the five and dime directly across 31 from the old Lorches building? I think it was called Elmores.
My fondest memories of Chilton Co. was my Grand Daddy would take me every Saturday out to Murray Glass's feed store in Jemison. He had those 10oz. Cokes that had been sitting in that cold cooler.... Man they were good!
Speaking of Driver's, They had the best fried apple pies I have ever had. With a big ole scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. :)

I can't believe that nobody hasn't mentioned the dinner bell. I really miss that place. Wasn't the lady that owned it named Vergie?

I too spent many Fri.&Sat. nites at the skating rink back in the day.(late70's-early80's) That was when the Scott's still owned it. When you could be dropped off before the doors were open and picked up10-15 min. after closing cause your partents knew they were watching out for us. Need more of that type of stuff now more people helping to make sure everyone is where they are suppose to be doing what they should. I also spent many Sundays at mims pond. There again like someone else said won't get in something like that now on a bet!! lol. The slides were awsome imagine the liability insurance it would take in todays world. As far as I know know one ever fell off or got any more than a small cut or bruises from them.
Ikes was the name of the restaurant close to the drive inn... anyone remember the chicken with the wing flapping or not. and why sometimes it did and sometimes it did'nt. How abbout BURDETT"S DRESS SHOP the best store for prom dresses?

back in those days i think the dari-de-lite was owned by a guy by the name of mr. maddox. i think he also owned the one in thorsby. thorsby also to be so small had some memories, the western auto, woods drug which had the soda and float bar, there was also a restaurant in the little building next to it, the post office with mr. jeff cleckler being the post master. robinsons garage, gordon headley's auction house across the tracks, pixies shoe store owned by mrs. janette ellison.

I use to go to the drive in with my girl friend, stop by Bob's for a hamburger, put two dollars worth of gas in dad's car, and still have change left from a five dollar bill.
