Commission receives update from airport

Hayes said he thought certain trees in the area were more of an obstruction than the buildings and he didn’t understand the “big push” to demolish the buildings when the trees also needed to go.

Both Cleckler and Airport Authority board member Billy Singleton explained that by getting rid of the county-owned buildings, it would help in the process of getting grants to rid other obstructions such as certain trees.

Comments about the Ferris wheel stemmed from the FAA granting a one-year extension in January 2013 for the Chilton County Fair to remain in the current location, near the airport, for the 2013 fair.

It had been previously announced in October 2012 that the fair would have to find a new location due to a proposed airport project that would extend the airport’s runway 1,000 feet to the west.

The fair posed safety issues with the airport that receives grants from the FAA and Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) Avionics Division due to having a lit Ferris wheel that was considered an obstruction near the airport’s runway.

Organizers held the 2013 fair near the airport but fair organizers are still working out options for a place to hold the 2014 fair.

Commissioner Shannon Welch said he thought the commission needed to sit down with members of the Kiwanis Club and work out a solution for finding a new location for the fair.

“I just don’t think it is right for us to say we are going to kick them off the property and then make it their problem to fix,” Welch said. “We owe it to them to work out a viable solution.”

Commission Chairman Allen Caton said if the commission didn’t allow the Chilton County Road Department to demolish the three buildings, bids would have to be sent out because the cost of the project would be over the state bid law.
