The Verbena defense didn't get much help from the team's offense on Friday.

The Verbena Red Devils managed a single touchdown in their 48-6 loss against the St. Jude Pirates on Friday night.

Senior Jacob Montgomery scored the only touchdown for the Red Devils when the Pirates were up by 28 at the top of the third quarter.

Savannah Diaz was crowned Verbena's Homecoming queen before Friday's game.

Immediately following the Red Devils touchdown, the Pirates ran back the punt return for a 75 yard touchdown.

Montgomery had two fumbles and 20 carries for 84 yards.

Red Devils junior Jared Mims had 13 carries for 56 yards and also had three completions on 12 attempts.

Although the Red Devils could not pull out a victory against the Pirates, Verbena principal Robin Cagle said the excitement and school spirit for the homecoming game had intensified after the Devils had to postpone their homecoming festivities for two weeks due to sickness on the opposing team’s side.

“We certainly were sad to have to postpone everything, but I think excitement for the game tonight grew after everyone anticipated it,” Cagle said.
