Collins Chapel home lost in fire

Published 8:32pm Tuesday, August 23, 2011

Fire claimed a home and several vehicles on Chilton County Road 633 in the Collins Chapel community Monday afternoon.

Collins Chapel Fire Department was dispatched to the scene shortly after 3 p.m., along with Thorsby, Clanton, Gap of the Mountain, Cedar Grove, and Union Grove fire departments.

The fire reportedly began as a brush fire, although the cause was still under investigation as of press time. In addition to the home, an outbuilding, automobile, motorcycle and tractor were also destroyed.

No injuries were reported.

“I’ve never seen anything spread so fast and so furious,” said Monica Carlisle, a fire medic with CCFD. “It was just really, really dry, and the wind was just whooping so fast.”

The blaze crossed the road in at least two places, Carlisle said, quickly intensifying the situation. Fortunately, fire officials were able to evacuate the family in time.
