Driver’s Ed classes full for summer

If any teen was on the fence about taking the Chilton County Driver’s Education course this summer, they’re already too late.

The class is full at 140 students spread out among three different schools – Isabella, Chilton County and Jemison. The reason the classes fill up so quickly is because the class isn’t offered during the school year.

“It’s not in the curriculum anymore,” said course organizer Tammy Griffin. “We’ve been doing it over the summer at least six years.”

The classes are being held July 5-8 and will begin at 7 a.m. and last until 3 p.m. each day. They cost $300 and require a $50 deposit. While it might seem a lot to pack in just four days, Griffin believes it benefits the students more than overwhelms them.

“When you take the driver’s ed class, you get a yellow card when you complete it,” she said. “You get to take that yellow card and turn it in to get your license. It also saves 20 to 30 percent on insurance.”

Instructors will cover all topics of roadway safety and will even go over aquatic safety. Upon completion, participants will even be able to acquire their boating license.
