The Maplesville Police Department arrested six men on May 19 in relation to the department burglary in April. Marcus Alexander, Mark Alexander, Cortez Childers, Guston Childers, Gussie Johnson and Jonathan Wilson were each charged with hindering prosecution by destroying evidence and property related to the MPD investigation. The Alabama Bureau of Investigation charged the men.

All were released on bond.

The Maplesville town council passed a resolution to inform the Chilton County Commission to put in a request to the justice department to change the local voting venue from the Maplesville Fire Department to the public library. The change is due to inadequate heating and cooling at the original venue. If approved, the change would not go into effect until the November general elections. The site will serve as the voting place for municipal, county, state and federal elections.

The July 13 runoff will take place at the fire department. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The council also voted to sell four vehicles owned by the town, including a 1980 Chevrolet derrick truck, a 1984 Ford F-800 dump truck, a 1986 Ford F-150 truck used as a mosquito truck and a 1996 Plymouth Voyager van. Mayor Kurt Wallace said the town does not use the vehicles. He wants to use whatever money is made from the sales to purchase a tractor for the town to work on nearby dirt roads.

The MPD recently received an application for a potential reserve officer, Jonathan Warren. The candidate will ride along with officers and will be required to pass a drug test.

The council also passed a resolution to declare the MPD drug dog town as surplus due to a lack of use and productivity. While Wallace and the council are not totally opposed to the dog serving the department, they felt the cost outweighed the benefit of having it. An MPD officer informed the council they could potentially sell the animal to another department for as much as $5,000-8,000. The council has yet to declare a minimum bid to advertise.

The council also passed a resolution to purchase print advertisements in The Clanton Advertiser special editions, including the Peach Festival edition for $450 and Faces and Places for $375.

The next council meeting will be held on July 13 at 6 p.m. at the Maplesville Public Library. There will be a Safety Committee Meeting beforehand at 5:30 p.m.
