Two males were shot and killed by a property owner during an altercation in Jemison mid-morning on July 8.

A call reporting a residential burglary and suspicious vehicle located between a fence and right of way on County Road 203 spurred authorities into action, according to the Chilton County Sheriff’s Office.

“While deputies were responding, a second call was received from the property owner stating two males had come to the property in an attempt to remove the vehicle, which the owner believed to contain items taken during the burglary,” according to Assistant Chief Deputy Shane Mayfield.

An altercation reportedly developed between the two males and the property owner, who fired shots during the encounter.

Upon deputies’ arrival, both burglary suspects were located with gunshot wounds and ultimately declared dead by the West Chilton Fire Department and Regional Paramedics Services, according to CCSO.

The case remains under investigation.

“Initial investigation does indicate that a burglary had taken place at the residence and that the suspicious vehicle reported by the property owner is connected to that burglary,” Mayfield said. “Based on evidence located at the scene, investigators do believe additional suspects and an additional vehicle were involved in the burglary.”

The two males killed in the July 8 incident cannot be placed by the Sheriff’s Office as being involved in the burglarization, according to CCSO.

According to information provided by Mayfield on July 16, a burglary suspect has been located and is awaiting interview by authorities.

CCSO urges anyone with further information to contact the Sheriff’s Office at (205) 755-4698 or anonymously at (205) 755-7898.
