Letter carriers hope to pick up more than just mail on May 12 as they participate in the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

“It is going to a great cause … to help our community,” rural carrier Charlotte Owens said.

Nonperishable food and canned goods collected in Chilton County will go to the Chilton County Emergency Assistance Center and Through the Grace of God Ministries.

Letter carrier Adam Moyes organizes the event each year.

Community members are asked to hang the bags of nonperishable food items on their mailboxes on May 12 prior to the time their mail is usually delivered. Items should be checked to ensure that the expiration date has not passed.

Owens said the mail carriers work together to make sure all the food is collected.

“I look forward to it,” Owens said.

The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is a project of the National Association of Letter Carriers.
