Rain forces cancellation of Chilton County Softball Tournament

The Chilton County Softball Tournament was cancelled due to rain that continued Thursday through Saturday, the three days that the tournament was scheduled for.

Jemison High School hosted the event and was forced to shuffle the plan on several occasions.

After rain disrupted the second game of pool play on Thursday, the adjusted schedule was to play the final two games from Thursday earlier in the day on Friday.

However, “mother nature” interrupted once again which led to the entire cancellation of pool play.

“You expect to get rain one of the days, but to get rain every single day is frustrating,” Jemison head coach Nathan Hayes said. “A lot of time and energy went into making it happen.”

Jemison put forth one last hope to get the tournament, which involved having the coaches from each team redraw a new seeding for a single-elimination tournament on Saturday.

It was the last attempt to hold the tournament as planned, and appeared to be possibility when Hayes arrived at the softball field at 6:45 a.m. Saturday.

According to Hayes, they had placed a tarp over the field throughout the night and though it would have taken some work, it was definitely doable.

Another band of rain hit the area, and wound up being the deciding factor in the tournament’s outcome.

Hayes watched as the field quickly transformed into a swamp.

“With the rain that came through, the field was under water in five minutes,” Hayes said.

There has not been a date agreed upon to reschedule the tournament, but Hayes will continue to talk with fellow coaches to explore possibilities.

The main problem is finding space on the calendar for each school at the same time. As the school year winds down, prom and various other events begin to erase vacancies in space.

“I would love to reschedule, but it will be tough this late in the season,” Hayes said.
