The town of Thorsby voted to give a $500 donation to the Thorsby FFA poultry judging and meat evaluation teams during the regularly scheduled meeting Monday.

The teams earned the opportunities to compete at the FFA National Convention by winning first place at the state convention on June 9.

Thorsby FFA advisor Brian Lucas approached the council about helping contribute monetarily toward expenses the teams will incur when heading to the National Convention Oct. 26-31 in Louisville, Ky.

The team is hoping to raise about $12,000.

Alabama ranks third in the country in poultry production, and the state has never had a team place in the top 10 at the National Convention.

Council members unanimously voted to contribute $500 toward the expenses for the trip.

Council member Randall Higgins was absent from Monday’s meeting.

The council also heard from Bryant Green with Cassidy and Company who reported on a repaving project from U.S. Highway 31 to the bridge on County Road 50. Green reported the project should be completed by mid-October, and noted three handicap ramps had to be installed.

The council also hired Tyler Hayes for a full-time position in the maintenance department at a pay rate of $9 per hour.

In other news, the council:

•Approved the minutes from the Aug. 3 council meeting.

•Approved an ordinance granting a franchise agreement with Centurytel.

•Voted to pay all appropriate bills.
