The Chilton County Commission voted to keep County Road 379 open after a resident who lives on the road requested the road be closed.

A public hearing was held during the regularly scheduled commission meeting Monday, which is a standard practice the commission follows when considering a road closure at the request of a resident.

Kitty Stasyszyn approached the commission at the Jan. 12 meeting to request closing a portion of County Road 379.

Stasyszyn said the road was being used as a “dumping ground” for people to dispose of things such as garbage and dead animals.

If anyone shows up with opposition, to the road closure during the public hearing, commissioners will usually vote against the road being closed.

Two individuals showed opposition saying having the road closed would be an inconvenience to them and their businesses.

Commissioners voted to keep the road open.

Commission Chairman Allen Caton told Stasyszyn that if she was having problems with trash being on the roads she could contact county litter agent Libby Ratliff.

“It is a county road so you could contact Libby,” Caton said.

Commissioner Joseph Parnell also suggested Stasyszyn contact the sheriff if issues persisted with individuals “partying” on the road.

County engineer Tony Wearren requested commissioners give permission for Wearren to solicit bids for a new tank for the road department.

Wearren told commissioners current tank is 19-years-old and the road department has had issues with the equipment.

Wearren said he estimated a new tank would cost roughly $59,000 and requested commissioners approve a few lin- item transfers in his budget to cover the cost for the tank.

Commissioners approved Wearren’s request.

In other news, the commission:

•Approved a request from the sheriff to use funds from vehicles sold as surplus to outfit new vehicles with equipment and use leftover funds to go toward purchasing new vehicles.

•Heard from Industrial Development Coordinator Fred Crawford about a $2.2 million expansion with KMA. Crawford said a groundbreaking ceremony would be held April 8 at 10 a.m. to celebrate the expansion.

•Approved Elmore Hicks to the Chilton County Water Authority board.

•Approved the 2015 tax levy.

•Adjourned the meeting into an executive session to discuss a pending legal matter.
