Women’s equestrian

•Jana Davenport (Jemison 2010) was recognized as a national All-Academic Award Winner by the United States Collegiate Athletic Association on May 14 for her scholastic achievement from fall of 2012 to spring of 2013 at Judson College.

At the close of the previous school year, the senior member of the equestrian program finished with a grade point average of 3.73.

Student athletes that were recognized academically by the USCAA had to maintain a GPA of 3.5 or above.

Spotlight

•Anthony Johnson (Maplesville 2013) hauled in a 23-yard touchdown pass from Max Shortell with 6:59 remaining in the third quarter to lead Jacksonville State (2-0) to a 24-22 victory in its season opener at Alabama State (0-2) on Aug. 31 in Montgomery.

After trailing 6-0 at halftime, the Gamecocks scored all of their points in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Hornets opened with a 6-yard touchdown run by Jahaad Coleman at the 11:29 mark and added an 8-yard touchdown reception by Chris Gilzeane from Daniel Duhart with 7:33 remaining in regulation.

After failing to complete a pass on the two-point conversion attempt following the score, ASU would regain possession at the 4:30 mark but would turn the ball over on downs after only four plays.

On Sept. 7, JSU cruised to a 48-13 triumph at home against Jacksonville (0-2) with Johnson contributing nine yards on one reception.

•Javae Swindle (Jemison 2012) totaled 108 yards rushing and one touchdown in leading West Alabama (1-0) to a 42-6 victory at home against Clark Atlanta (0-1) on Sept. 7 in Livingston.

The 5-4, 145 pound sophomore carried the ball 13 times and scored his first touchdown of the season on a 3-yard scamper at the 11:07 mark of the third quarter.

Football

•Philander Browder II (Marbury 2010) is a wide receiver for Tuskegee, who opened the season with a 23-7 win at Alabama A & M (0-1) on Sept. 7 in Huntsville.

The 6-1, 190-pound senior is a Verbena native.

•Taylor Hughes (Chilton County 2010) is a 6-1, 205-pound quarterback for Huntingdon College, who opened the year on Sept. 14 at Mississippi College (0-1) in Clinton, Miss.

•Blake Lawley (Isabella 2010) is a 6-1, 220-pound senior defensive lineman for HC.

•Hunter Mims (Isabella 2010) is a 6-1, 245-pound senior offensive lineman for HC.

•Cameron Andrews (Maplesville 2013) is a 5-9, 219-pound freshman linebacker for West Alabama.

•Austin Rossi (Chilton County 2013) is a 6-1, 215-pound linebacker for Birmingham-Southern, who opened the season with a 59-38 win at LaGrange College (0-1) on Sept. 7 in LaGrange, Ga.

Volleyball

•Amber Wyatt (Isabella 2011) has contributed as a middle blocker in two competitions for South Alabama, who are off to a 2-4 start.

From Aug. 30-31, USA opened the season with wins at home against Tennessee State (3-4) and Southern Utah (1-5).

•Allison Mims (Isabella 2013) contributed three digs, two server aces and one kill as a starting outsider hitter for Wallace Community College Selma (4-1, 1-0 Alabama Community College Conference in a 3-0 victory at home against Jefferson Davis Community College (0-4, 0-3 ACC) on Sept. 4 in Selma.
