The Chilton County Board of Education approved more employee hires and employee resignations in a special meeting Tuesday.

The following employees were approved on emergency basis:

•Chilton County High School (grades 9–12) – Elizabeth Ann Hubbard, history teacher.

•Clanton Elementary School (grades K–2) – Chandal Phillips, collaborative education teacher; Susie Smith, elementary teacher; Ben Ard, physical education teacher; Sweda Muir, special education preschool teacher assistant.

•Clanton Middle School (grades 6–8) – Vikii Mims, Chilton Alternative Program teacher.

•Jemison Elementary (grades K–4) – Cherish Leah Cartee, elementary teacher (Title I); Wessica Leah Blackmon Wargo, elementary teacher (Title I); Cassandra Edge, special education teacher assistant.

•Jemison Middle School (grades 5–7) – Katherine Maddox, elementary teacher; Marcy Price, elementary teacher; Patrick Hardiman, elementary teacher.

•Jemison High School (grades 8–12) – Crystal Martin, cafeteria assistant; Jessica Q. Howland, math teacher; Oliver Brandon Gurganus, social science teacher.

•Maplesville (grades K–12) – Shannon Tipton, counselor; Brittany Yeargan, elementary teacher (CSR); Megan Leonard, elementary teacher (CSR).

Positions filled on emergency basis are for one year only and have to be reposted at the end of the school year.

The following resignations were approved:

•Carlton LeSueur, assistant principal/teacher at Thorsby, effective Aug. 10.

•Michelle Lowery, Jemison bus driver, effective Aug. 9.

•Marshell Wilson, pre-K teacher assistant (OSR) at Clanton Elementary School, effective Aug. 13.

•Shannon Wright, special education teacher assistant at Clanton Middle School, effective Aug. 12.

The board granted leave requests to: Angela Culp Glass at Jemison Middle, effective Oct. 7 for six weeks; and Kimberly S. Rasberry at Jemison Elementary, Aug. 23–Oct. 18.

The board also approved a substitute employee list and substitute pay schedule reflecting a 2-percent raise; changing Brooke Elliott’s classification from technology teacher to career technical teacher at Jemison High; to post vacancies; and to allow Maplesville Pee Wee Athletics using Maplesville’s football stadium on Saturdays for the 2013 season.

In other business, the board approved Special Education Program requests to: post positions at Clanton Elementary for a special education teacher assistant and Jemison Elementary for a special education teacher assistant (posted Aug. 2); and to secure contracts to provide for related special education services including behavioral counseling, educational support specialist for the hearing impaired, occupational therapy, physical therapy and orientation and mobility services for the visually impaired.

In his report, Chilton County Schools Superintendent Dave Hayden said projects at Jemison Elementary (road repaving) and Jemison Middle (renovations to former JMS building at JHS) will be finished by Monday.

Hayden briefly addressed concerns he has received about how Alabama’s new gun law that took effect earlier this month would affect safety at local schools.

The new law expands the rights of gun owners in the state and seems to expand where people can openly carry firearms, but Hayden said the existing federal ban on possession of guns on school property still holds.

“The state has advised us to post ‘firearms prohibited’ signs everywhere,” Hayden said. “We are in the process of doing that. It’s still a violation of federal law if we conceal outlawed firearms on school properties.”
