Learning different aspects of what the Chilton County Sheriff’s Department faces on a daily basis will be the focus of the fourth annual Junior Deputy Academy Aug. 5-9.

The program is open to children between the ages of 8 and 18 and will be held at the LeCroy Career Technical Career.

Deputy David Hubbard with the sheriff’s department said the program is beneficial to children who want to see what the department faces each day.

“It is great for us as officers as well to be able to interact with the kids,” Hubbard said. “We have a lot of fun and have had good success with it the last couple of years.”

Students will learn about topics including physical fitness, self-discipline, jail operations, responsibility, leadership, criminal investigations and dive team.

There will also be classes about weapon safety, sheriff’s office operations, narcotics investigations, K-9 and S.W.A.T.

Students will also have the opportunity to tour the county jail, the sheriff’s office, Chilton County E-911 and meet with Sheriff Kevin Davis.

Hubbard said several topics will be covered each day throughout the week with a graduation ceremony on Aug. 9 where the students will be presented with certificates and awards for completing the program.

The program will begin each day at 7:30 a.m. and last until 3:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday. The schedule on Friday will be from 7:30 a.m.-noon.

Lunch will be provided each day and each student will receive daily handout items.

Hubbard said the academy will be limited to the first 200 applicants and a parent or legal guardian must sign the student in and out each day.

Those participating need to wear casual clothing with tennis shoes.

Registration forms for the program are available at the sheriff’s department or online at ChiltonCountySo.org.

Registration forms need to be turned in for the program no later than July 24 at the Sheriff’s office located inside the Chilton County Courthouse with a $10 registration fee.
