Dr. Richard Bailey will give a lecture at the Chilton-Clanton Public Library on Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. in honor of Black History month.

Library director Kelly Easterling said Bailey lives in Montgomery but visited the library in October 2012 to do research and Easterling asked him to return to the library to give a lecture.

“Bailey was just a really nice person and I thought he would be someone interesting to bring back and have speak at the library,” Easterling said.

Bailey has been a consultant for the Center for Public Television at the University of Alabama where he was a consultant for their productions on the Lincoln School of Marion and Reconstruction black officeholders. He was an advisor for the radio documentary, “Remembering Slavery,” produced by the Institute for Language and Culture at the University of Montevallo.

Bailey is a member of the Alabama Humanities Foundation and has written “They Too Call Alabama Home, African American Profiles 1800-1999,” and “Neither Carpetbaggers nor Scalawags: Black Officeholders during the Reconstruction of Alabama, 1867-1878.”

Bailey said he will speak on the 2013 theme for Black History month, “At the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality: The Emancipation Proclamation and the March on Washington,” and will autograph copies of his book after the lecture on Feb. 12.
