Eight local students who have proven themselves as the top spellers at their schools will compete in the Chilton County Spelling Bee on Friday, Feb. 1.

The bee was originally scheduled for Wednesday but is postponed until Friday because of inclement weather.

The bee will begin at 9 a.m. at the Alabama Power Conference Center in Clanton.

The winner will advance to the Alabama Spelling Bee to be held March 9 at Oak Mountain High School in Birmingham.

Below are the students competing in the county bee Friday:

•Sarah Beth Huntley, a fifth grader at Clanton Intermediate, spelled “bravado” correctly to win the CIS bee. She is the daughter of Tony and Elizabeth “Liz” Huntley.

•Nicolas Johnson, a seventh grader at Clanton Middle, spelled “cerebellum” correctly to win the CMS bee. He is the son of Michael and Kathleen Johnson.

•Isaac Graham, a seventh grader at Isabella, spelled “baccalaureate” correctly to win the IHS bee. He is the son of Glen and Leah Graham.

•Sarah Hubbard, a fourth grader at Jemison Elementary, spelled “preposterous” correctly to win the JES bee. She is the daughter of Nicholas and Tracie Hubbard and Leslie Cleckler.

•Jacylin Smith, a fifth grader at Jemison Middle, spelled “elaborative” correctly to win the JMS bee. She is the daughter of Brenda Smith.

•Joe Champion, a seventh grader at Maplesville, spelled “suitable” correctly to win the MHS bee. He is the son of Jarrod and Jessecka Champion.

•Cody Cater, an eighth grader at Thorsby, spelled “transfixed” correctly to win the THS bee. He is the son of Robert and Amanda Brown.

•Alana Delariva, a sixth grader at Verbena, spelled “democracy” correctly to win the VHS bee.

The Alabama Spelling Bee is sponsored by Adventure Travel and sends the winner to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., each year.

The Alabama Spelling Bee program is open to all students, kindergarten through eighth grade, whose schools enrolled with the Scripps National Spelling Bee program by Oct. 15, 2012.
