I empathize with Charity Hardiman’s recent letter to the editor. After being involved with two counties that not only adequately fund their respective humane societies but also provide animal control services, it has been more than frustrating in dealing with animal issues for Chilton County.

We are doing our best here at the Humane Society in not only caring for the animals at our facility, but in being a resource for animal welfare. Currently, we provide more than reasonable prices for our adoptable animals, which include the animals being fixed, up-to-date on vaccinations, wormed, heartworm tested and given prevention, micro-chipped and given flea and tick treatment. Twice a month, we also provide a drop-off and pick-up point for low cost spay/neuter services for animal owners that desire an affordable alternative to unwanted litters.

While we continue to help the best we can, we are at a loss at being able to do more. The cost per animal that we receive from the county only allows us to adequately care for 29 animals a month. There are times when we receive more than 29 animals in just one day!

I have heard of elected officials promising to give more money and to actually have an animal control officer for the county. So far, nothing has been done regarding either issue.
