Authorities arrested Shane Eugene Jarrett, 33, of Verbena on Thursday for the fatal stabbing of Johnny Wayne Spigner Jr., 30, of Marbury.

Chilton County Sheriff Kevin Davis said Jarrett was arrested at his home at 3:30 p.m. and charged with one count of manslaughter and one count of assault first-degree for the homicide that occurred Oct. 25 at Martin’s Trailer Park in Enterprise shortly after 9 p.m.

“Deputies responded to a disturbance call of someone that had been cut at lot 47 in the trailer park,” Davis said. “Once deputies were on scene they found the victim with a stab wound to his abdomen area.”

According to the charging documents, Spigner showed up to the home of Jarrett after doing some work together earlier in the day. The two had an altercation and Jarrett stabbed Spigner in the abdomen with a small pocketknife. When deputies arrived on the scene, they instructed Jarrett to put the knife down as they located Spigner.

“Spigner was found in the backyard of one of the trailers with a stab wound,” Davis said. “Jarrett had told the deputy on the scene that he had been arguing with Spigner earlier in the day.”

Jarrett told one of the deputies on scene he answered his door to find Spigner wanting to confront him when the fight occurred and Spigner punched Jarrett in the face.

Rescue and paramedics arrived on scene where the victim was pronounced dead on the scene.

Initially, investigators withheld an arrest until they conducted interviews due to Jarrett’s claim that he was defending himself, his wife and children.

Authorities were reluctant to arrest Jarrett due to Spigner showing up at Jarrett’s home, with his family inside the house, causing a disturbance.

“The last thing we wanted to do is arrest someone who was protecting their home and their family,” Davis said. “On the opposite side of that, we obviously did not want to have a man who killed someone not get arrested.”

Davis said through the course of investigation the evidence found warranted charges of one count manslaughter and one count of assault first-degree.

Jarrett’s bond was set at $60,000, and he was placed in the Chilton County Jail where he posted bond on Friday.

The case will now be presented to an 18-member grand jury.
