In an effort to provide more textbooks for Chilton County School system, Pam Price created an event on Oct. 22 at the Jemison Town Hall featuring barbecue and bingo.

Price said there are not enough textbooks in the schools for the children and is working to raise more than $40,000 to purchase them.

“There are not enough textbooks already and only getting $1.70 per child to purchase the textbooks last year while also adopting a new math book this year has left the children without more books,” Price said in a release.

Price has been working on several different events that have currently raised $15,000 for textbooks.

“After collecting the schools orders, for textbooks, I realized this was not enough money to meet the needs of their requests,” Price said.

Price said Verbena, Maplesville, Jemison, and Clanton Elementary schools all need math textbooks while Jemison High School needs computer application. Thorsby needs third and fifth grade English books.

“It is a sad day when our children can not take a book home for homework or studying,” Price said. “They need a book to own.”

The event starts at 5:30 p.m. with bingo at 6:15 and is organized by Price, Jemison librarian Tammie McGriff and state Sen. Cam Ward.

Barbecue plates will cost $5 each, and bingo cards will be $1 each. All proceeds will be used to purchase textbooks in Chilton County.

Bingo prizes will include gas, grocery, and restaurant gift cards.
