Anyone looking for a good excuse to eat as many slices of pizza as their hearts desire need look no further than Pizza Hut’s upcoming contest.

From now until Oct. 25, Pizza Hut of Clanton will accept entrants for its first pizza-eating contest Saturday, Oct. 27, all proceeds of which will benefit the World Hunger Program.

“What Pizza Hut does every year is we raise money for the World Hunger Program,” said Sholanda Patterson, shift manger of Clanton’s Pizza Hut. “It provides meals around the globe to underprivileged children. It’s like a school meal program.”

Patterson said $1 feeds four children through the program.

The contest entry fee is $10 per person. Contestant sponsorships and private donations will be accepted too.

The contest will begin at 2:30 p.m. at Pizza Hut of Clanton.

Patterson said the restaurant will remain open during the contest for regular diners, but anyone is welcome to watch the 30-minute contest, complete with an emcee and a judge.

“We have some football players coming over from Chilton County High School to do it, so it’s going to be a good time,” Patterson said. “What we’re hoping for is that it’s big enough this year that we could definitely try to do it again next year.”

Patterson said anybody may stop by Pizza Hut to donate to the World Hunger Program, to register for the pizza-eating contest or to sponsor someone in the contest.

On Oct. 27, contestants should check their guilt at the door and be prepared to eat slice after slice of large cheese and pepperoni pizzas for a worthy cause.
