Arts council prepares for second showcase

Artists and crafters from near and far will convene in October for the Chilton County Arts Council’s second Artists’ Showcase.

The first showcase last year drew more than 40 vendors and 700 attendees, paving the way for it to become an annual community event.

“Our main objective is that artists do not need to be penalized,” said Elizabeth Byrd, Arts Council president. “They need to be rewarded.”

Byrd said all of the vendors in the first showcase expressed interest in participating in future showcases.

“Every vendor last year wanted to come back,” she said. “We sure made a good impression on them.”

The showcase allows vendors to display and sell paintings, drawings, sculptures and many more handmade pieces of art.

“There’s a lot of hand work that goes into this,” Byrd said. “Somebody’s heart and soul goes into this stuff. There’s a story with each piece.”

Byrd said live music and entertainment separates Chilton County’s showcase from other, similar events in a positive way.

Performers are still needed for the second showcase, and anyone interested in a spot should contact Byrd for available times.

The Artists’ Showcase will take place at the Clanton Conference and Performing Arts Center at Jefferson State Community College on Oct. 27 (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Oct. 28 (noon to 4 p.m.).

Admission is free, and food made by council members will be for sale.

A silent auction featuring donated items from local individuals and businesses will take place during the showcase.

Applications for vendor booths are due by Oct. 13. To get an application, email chiltoncountyartscouncil@hotmail.com or visit the Chilton County Arts Council Facebook page.

Booth fees are $10 for members and $35 for non-members.

Those who is not already Arts Council members may join at the showcase.

Membership fees per year are $20 for individuals, $10 for students and $40 for families.

Membership benefits include meetings the second Sunday of each month and access to private events, such as wine and cheese tastings and musical performances.
