Chilton County is slated to receive about $3.5 million from the state for upcoming road repairs.

The money will be in the form of grants through the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program.

Three local projects have been approved:

•Resurfacing County Road 59 from the CSX Railroad line to County Road 24. ATRIP would fund about $2.03 million of the project, while the Chilton County Commission has approved a match in the amount of $507,153.10.

The project could be a boon for the Chilton County Industrial Park.

“That was the main point that the task force based their decision on,” county Engineer Tony Wearren said.

The road also serves as a detour in the event of Interstate 65 being closed.

•Resurfacing County Road 42 from Highway 31 to Interstate 65. ATRIP would provide about $1.08 million, while the city of Jemison (the project’s sponsor) would owe $271,159.80. Jemison Mayor Eddie Reed said the project has not been approved by the city council because engineers haven’t given final approval. “There’s a bridge there that’s the issue,” Reed said. “That’s going to be a cost that wasn’t part of the original plan.”

•Resurfacing Lake Mitchell Road from Interstate 65 to Nell Street in Clanton. Mayor Billy Joe Driver said officials might have overestimated the cost of the project. So, the resurfacing could go all the way to the four-way stop in front of the old Adair School.

ATRIP would contribute more than $345,000 for the project, while the city would shell out $86,493.

“I’m trying to get it all the way into town,” Driver said. “That road is cracking real bad, and it’s a pretty main artery into town.”
