The fall break will be removed from the 2011-2012 school calendar for the Chilton County School System. The Chilton County Board of Education approved the new calendar Tuesday.

In October 2010, teachers and students received Monday, Oct. 11 off. Teachers returned for parent conferences on Tuesday, Oct. 12, while students didn’t return until the following day, Wednesday, Oct. 13.

Next year, neither teachers nor students will receive a fall break. Students will continue to have their student holiday, but on that day (Monday, Oct. 17) parent/teacher conferences will be held.

“It’s a smaller fall break than usual for the kids,” said Dave Hayden, superintendent.

“The state superintendent of education required the students to begin school Aug. 15,” said Hayden. “We had to eliminate the fall break to keep one of the weather days in the spring and for everything to fall in place.”

For teachers, a required in-service day was moved from January to August. Teachers will have to work the Thursday and Friday before classes start on Monday, Aug. 15 and will have another in-service day after the last day of classes in May.

The weather days for next year are Friday, April 27 and Friday, May 11. Students and teachers will continue to receive two weeks off for the Christmas holiday, and school will close for the year on Thursday, May 24, 2012.
