Youth to walk marathon, share gospel with community

Youth from Lomax Assembly of God in Clanton will walk a marathon’s distance in three days in an effort to share Jesus Christ’s love with the community.

For the first year ever, Lomax’s EPIC Student Ministries will undertake a 26-mile trek they are calling Via Dolorosa, which translates to “The Way of Suffering,” to provide people with a glimpse of what Christ endured for them.

Via Dolorosa is a street in Jerusalem where Jesus walked carrying the cross on his way to be crucified.

“We’ll be carrying a cross the whole time with us in our little caravan,” said Pastor Erron Price. “Different people will be carrying it. It’s just to impact student lives about the reality of what Christ did for them.”

Between 30 and 40 walkers will depart from Jemison City Park on Friday, April 13 at about 4:30 p.m.

They will walk eight miles along Highway 31 to Lomax Assembly of God, where they will watch “Passion of the Christ” and have prayer and devotion.

On Saturday, they will leave Lomax at 9 a.m. and walk to Peach Park in Clanton, have lunch there and walk back to Lomax, for a total of 16 miles.

Students will meet at Jack’s on Sunday morning and walk about two miles to Lomax for the service at 10:30 a.m.

Price said the entire community is invited to attend the service April 15.

“Whether you’re a believer or not, Christ never gave in to the suffering and pain of carrying our weight of sin,” Price said. “We want to share Christ’s love with everyone we pass and see. Although we can never truly express what Christ went through, we want to use this as an avenue to refresh people’s perspective of what Christ did for them.”

Lomax is also accepting pledges and donations to Speed The Light, a World Missions Program.

All proceeds will go toward tools missionaries need to share the gospel, such as PA systems, generators, projectors, bibles, vehicles and more.

“This event will not only touch people’s lives around our community and world, but it will give each student that carries the cross a fresh vision of what our Savior went through,” Price said.
