Verbena closes out season with win

VERBENA – Verbena’s and Billingsley’s football seasons ended Friday night in Red Devil stadium.

It was a successful Senior Night for the Red Devils, as they defeated the Bears, 32-30.

Devon Hardy ran the ball into the end zone for the first score of the night with 7:38 left on the clock.

The Red Devils’ ensuing drive continued into the second quarter, where the Bears led 8-0. Seven seconds into the second, Coston completed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Creger.

The following kickoff was returned 91 yards for a BHS touchdown by Browder.

One play into Verbena’s next drive, senior running back Dustin Short ran the ball 23 yards to put the Red Devils into scoring range. Short finished the drive two plays later when he ran 11 yards on a counter for a VHS touchdown with 7:00 left in the first half.

Coston then completed a pass that turned into an 82-yard touchdown for the Red Devils 3:27 remaining in the first half.

The Red Devils defense held the Bears next drive to only four plays and got the ball back with 1:53 left and scored on a 19-yard scramble by Coston with 10 seconds left in the half and put the Red Devils ahead 32-16 going into halftime.

BHS’s defense stopped the Red Devils’ first drive of the second half. Ten running plays and 41 yards later, Billingsley quarterback Garret Price scored on a quarterback sneak with 4:46 left in the third quarter.

After three quarters, BHS was down by eight, but they had the ball on their own 22 yard line. Price completed a 28 yard pass to Andrew Dudley on a third and long play. A few plays later, Price scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak that moved the Bears within two points of the Red Devils. The Bears’ 2-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful .

The Bears got the ball back on their 38-yard line. The Bears called a run play on the next play, when, on his last play as a Red Devil, Garret Dennis forced a fumble that was recovered by Coston.

The Red Devils finished the season with a 3-7. After the close loss, the Bears finished the season 3-7.
