Arbor Day is not till April, but the Chilton County Alabama Extension Office and the Chilton Natural Resource Council got a head start and held its annual tree giveaway on Feb. 20 in downtown Clanton.

The giveaway is initiated each year by the Alabama Forestry Commission, and it is held in February because trees are dormant at this time. This time of year gives Extension and the council the ability to get bare root trees out to the public. Early spring is the best time to plant trees, whether that is in the ground or in a container with potting soil.

The giveaway handed out all of its trees that featured several varieties that added color and blooms to any landscape. The variety of trees that were handed out included Arrowhead Viburnum, Bald Cypress, crabapple, Eastern Redbud, pecan, persimmon, Red Maple, River Birch, Scarlet Oak, Tulip Poplar, Red Buckeye, Wax Myrtle, Paw Paw and Flowering Dogwood.
