The Thorsby High School varsity girl’s basketball team got the best of Verbena High School 56-22 in the last first-round matchup of the 2023 Chilton County Basketball Tournament. The No. 3 seeded Rebels were led by Makinley Turner with 20 points.

The Rebels built a lead early on, but their energy dipped, and coach Kris Wood went to press to help get Thorsby going again.

“It’s always good to get a win, especially in the county tournament,” Wood said. “I thought we executed well in the first quarter but couldn’t hit any shots … We got the press going and our players responded to that, and we played pretty good basketball after that.”

Thorsby managed their advantage the remainder of the game to take the first meeting of the season between the two county rivals.

The semifinals of the varsity girl’s 2023 Chilton County Basketball Tournament are now set with No. 3 Thorsby advancing to take on the No. 2 seed Chilton County High School on Jan. 6 at 5:30 p.m. at Jemison High School.

“We’ll need to really limit our mistakes and play with intensity from the start and hopefully shoot better if we are going to challenge Chilton County Friday night,” Wood said. “I know our girls will give it their best.”

The No. 1 seed Isabella High School will face the No. 4 seed Jemison on Jan. 5 at 5:30 p.m. at Jemison High School in the other girl’s semifinal.
