Much needed paving at Main and Second streets in Jemison will be completed soon, weather permitting.
The Jemison City Council approved Central Alabama Paving for the project during a meeting on March 16 after they submitted the lowest bid of $194,775.50.
Mayor Eddie Reed stressed that paving costs are expensive and the project was for less than a mile of road.
“We have monies on hand to do this,” Reed said.
The project will use existing funds in the budget for roads, and the city may potentially transfer some funds from the debt service.
According to the agreement with the company, it will have 30 days from when they are notified of the approval to complete the project.
This is the first phase of paving.
“Our second phase will be County Road 71 and County Road 44,” Reed said.
This phase is expected to be a focus this summer.
Reed said paving was needed in the city. Recent rains have washed out even some of the areas that were patched, he said.
The Council also approved an agreement with the Alabama Department of Transportation to maintain portions of the state right-of-way in Jemison for State Route 3 (US 31) and US 191.
Three annexations were approved as ordinances that has previously been approved by resolution.
The Council suspended the rules to be able to do the first and second reading votes on the annexations in the same meeting.
