Agriscience students at Chilton County High School will soon have additional tools thanks to a $750 PEECh grant from the Chilton Education Foundation.

“We will be purchasing wood lathes for pen turning,” teacher Marlon Harton said. “We bought two last year, so now we are going to be able to get two more.”

The students use the tools to make wooden pens. Harton said he wanted to be able to offer the project after seeing it at a workshop four or five years ago.

“We can use different types of hardwood, such as maple, cherry, walnut, so that is going to change the color of the pen,” Harton said. “They can also change it to the diameter they want.”

Harton said he has applied to the grant program for the past three years.

“It pleases me greatly to be able to make this presentation for you,” Mickey Bates of the Chilton Education Foundation said when he presented the grant.

“This organization has been in existence for about 25 years,” Bates said. “In that 25 years, it has awarded to teachers like Mr. Harton here over a half million dollars in grant money.”

These grant funds have been distributed to each of the public schools in Chilton County based on applications.
