Cold air is not expected to leave Chilton County until the weekend, when temperatures could reach 60 degrees.
“Significantly colder temperatures are expected to arrive once this current system moves through,” meteorologist Kristina Sumrall with the National Weather Service said Monday afternoon. “It is going to be bitterly cold.”
On Monday afternoon, the NWS cautioned motorists of the potential for portions of roads, bridges and overpasses across portions of central Alabama to become slick with black ice forming due to the rainfall.
Due to the rainfall on Monday and the changing temperatures expected to arrive Monday night and Tuesday morning, motorists in Chilton County were urged to use caution while driving Monday night and early Tuesday morning.
Temperatures on Tuesday are expected to reach 43 degrees during the day and drop to the mid-20s Tuesday night.
Sumrall said Wednesday temperatures will only reach 41 degrees with a brisk wind that could bring gusts of up to 30 miles per hour.
“It is going to feel very cold on Wednesday,” Sumrall said.
Overnight lows on Wednesday will be about 16 degrees.
Thursday should see highs of 34 degrees and a low of about 21 degrees.
Currently, there is a 20-percent chance of a “wintry mix” in the forecast for Thursday night into Friday morning.
“We are watching things right now because if the storm system we are looking at comes through when temperatures are around 21 degrees, we could see some precipitation,” Sumrall said. “We don’t think there will be a significant problem because temperatures on Friday are expected to be in the 40s.”
The forecast Saturday shows a 50-percent chance of rain with a high near 56 degrees, and Sunday should see partly sunny skies with a high near 62 degrees.
