Three local softball teams to compete in regional tournament

Katlyn Childress pitched in both wins againat Maplesville. She allowed two hits and one walk while striking out six in the first game, while completing a no-hitter with six strikeouts in the second game.
“We just hope to ride that momentum to Troy and hopefully on to Montgomery for state,” Lawrence said.
Verbena finishes second in Area 6
Verbena finished second to Wadley in the Area 6 tournament.
The Red Devils opened the tournament with a 17-1 win over Loachapoka before falling to Wadley, 16-7.
In a rematch with Loachapoka to determine which team would advance, Verbena grinded out a 10-7 win.
The Devils fell in the championship round, 15-1.
“We played four games back-to-back with only 11 players,” Verbena coach Ricky Atcheson said. “My girls were relentless. They persevered and displayed tremendous character and discipline.”
Senior Karoline Moore and freshmen Makayla Mims and Candice Williams were named to the all-tournament team.
In four games, Verbena batted a combined .359.
Mims led the way, going 7-for-11 for a .636 average, while Williams, Chelsea Ray, Courtney Penton and Moore all batted .500.
Ray also had a home run.
Katelyn Green went 6-for-14 in the tournament, and Samantha Dopson went 4-for-9.
Williams earned two wins on the mound, pitching 11 innings while giving giving up eight runs on five hits and 15 walks, and striking out nine batters.
