In other news, the commission:
•Voted to allow Chilton County Emergency Management Agency Director Derrick Wright to begin researching alternatives to weather sirens during times of severe weather.
Wright told commissioners he would like to research different weather programs to alert individuals of severe weather in the county.
“Arkansas got hit by a tornado, and I read where the people were waiting on the weather sirens to go off,” Wright said. “If you are waiting on a siren, it is too late.”
Commissioner Heedy Hayes said many people in the county still listened to the sirens as an indication of severe weather and worried about getting rid of them.
“I am not opposed to looking at anything new, but until we get something in place, I want to keep the weather sirens going because people in our county still rely on those.”
Caton said he didn’t want to do away with the sirens until an alternative solution could be put in place.
“I know other counties in Alabama have done away with weather sirens so I would encourage you to research what the other counties decided to do as far as severe weather alerts,” Caton told Wright.
•Voted for Caton to solicit prices for renovations to the restrooms at the Chilton County Courthouse.
•Scheduled a work session for May 13 at 6 p.m. to discuss the updated policies and procedures manual for the county.
•Scheduled a work session for May 29 at 6 p.m. at the request of Parnell to discuss the Alabama Open Meetings Act.
Parnell said he thought it would be good for commissioners to discuss the law with County Attorney John Hollis Jackson and make sure everyone is aware of different rules listed in the law.
