Phrase is endorsement of religion

Dear Editor,

I recently learned that Maplesville High School is displaying the phrase “God Bless America” on its website. The school also has a plaque with this phrase on display in its offices.

As a Jemison High School alumnus and resident of Chilton County, I object to this action from a publicly funded institution. In this case, the phrase “God Bless America” acts as an endorsement of religious belief disguised as patriotism, violating the Establishment Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

Public school students should be allowed to determine their own personal beliefs as part of a well-rounded education. It is inappropriate for public schools to promote religious or political beliefs.
