Verbena's defenders try to stop the Mustang offense.

VERBENA — The Isabella Mustangs overpowered the Verbena Red Devils 36-6 Friday night.

Isabella kicker Ricky Burt put up the first points with a 28-yard field goal in the first. No one would score again until the second quarter, when Austin Haigler connected with Dylan Green for a 10-yard touchdown.

Then, with just seconds remaining in the first half, Verbena’s Christian Coston ran it in from the 7.

The score was 9-6 Isabella at the half, and it would be all Mustangs from there.

The Mustangs fumbled well into Verbena territory but redeemed themselves when Rickie Calfee ran an interception 37 yards across the goal line.

In the fourth, Haigler ran a 5-yard touchdown and later found Green again for another 6 points.

Tyler Smith set up a short Mustangs touchdown with a long run to the 1-yard line. Mason Pate fumbled the ball but recovered it in the end zone. The kick was good, putting the Mustangs up by 30 points.

The Red Devils got within seven yards of scoring, but Mustang Caleb Freeman forced a fumble with just 10.1 seconds remaining, and it was over.

“Really, our game plan didn’t change. We just challenged our guys,” Isabella coach Scott Booth said.

Booth said he wants the team to play more consistently in the first half and capitalize on more opportunities in the red zone.

Garrett Dennis led in tackles for Verbena with a total of 9 tackles and 4 assists.
