Headley to take reigns of VHS

The Chilton County Board of Education named Tommy Headley the new principal of Verbena School on Tuesday, effective Oct. 1.
Headley, currently a vice principal at Verbena, took the place of Keith Moore three and a half years ago when Moore took office as superintendent. Previously, Headley taught math at Verbena and also taught at Maplesville and Dallas County High School.
Verbena’s outgoing principal, Larry Raines, who is leaving the school for a statewide role in the Technology Initiative Department, served as a mentor to both Headley and Moore.
“I would just like to say congratulations to Mr. Headley, and I think he’ll do a great job for Mr. Raines,” Moore said Tuesday. “He’ll be ready for the challenge.”
In other business, the board recognized three local high school seniors for scoring within the nation’s top 100 on the Skills USA test. These were Robert Moore, Jacob Burnett, Dylan Linehan and Derek Williams.
Burnett and Linehan are architectural drafting students at LeCroy Career/Technical Center, while Williams is a technical drafting student and Moore is taking cabinetry. Each received a plaque during Monday’s meeting.
“Our students are all capable of doing this,” said LeCroy instructor Josh Phillips. “Their level of participation is what makes it if they’re willing to get out and try.”
Phillips recognized Career/Tech Supervisor Carol Easterling and school officials for their support of the Skills USA program.
The board also:
•Hired Sarah Eiland-Woods for a temporary science teacher position at Jemison High School.
•Renewed general liability insurance with ARMS at $20,671 (a $78 increase from last year).
•Renewed automobile liability insurance with ARMS at $21,862 (no increase).
•Granted permission for Sandra Cullen to take students to DECA Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. on Nov. 10-12.
•Allowed the Maplesville Athletic Department and Club to begin fundraising for a new field house facility.
•Granted permission to add a vocational route as needed for Chilton County High School and to post an emergency bus route to alleviate overcrowding at Jemison schools.
