Jefferson State Community College will offer a basic computer class designed specifically for senior citizens later this month.

Computer for Seniors Basic will begin Sept. 22 and run through Oct. 13. Classes will be held each Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon.

At least 10 people must sign up for the class to be offered at the Clanton campus.

“It’s very, very popular at the Shelby and Jefferson locations,” said Stephanie Tinsley, coordinator of community education with Jeff State. “We hope to offer it once per semester.”

Tinsley said the course covers basic tasks using Windows, file management, typing on a word processor, navigating the World Wide Web and working with e-mail. The class is similar to the Computers Made Easy course but is taught at about half the pace.
Anyone 55 and up may participate.

“Seniors are a little bit more intimidated by computer learning,” Tinsley said. “The instructors use a lot of hands-on methodology during class. Before they get to the hands-on, though, they preview everything through visual learning.”

Those who complete Computer for Seniors Basic will have the opportunity to follow up with an intermediate course, she added.
