The Longleaf Alliance, which serves Chilton County, will conduct seminars on longleaf pine management later this month and in early August.

Also put on by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, the seminars will be held at the Wehle Nature Center in Bullock County on July 27, at the Autauga County Extension Office on July 29 and at the Shelby County Extension Office on Aug. 3. All seminars will take place at 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. and are open to the public.

Longleaf Alliance president Rhett Johnson said the meetings are aimed at landowners and land managers who either own or want to own longleaf pine forests. He said the instruction varies some at each workshop.

“Every meeting has a presentation on the cultural and natural history of longleaf,” Johnson said. “It figures so strongly in the history of the Southeast. We try to emphasize that role as well as the natural history and ecological value.”

Presentations also focus on planting and managing young longleaf, wildlife consideration, cost-share opportunities for landowners and general discussion on how to sell timber. Some talks will also focus on threatening endangered species in forests.

The organizations encourage all interested parties to attend. A registration fee of $20 will be collected at the door. The fee includes a catered lunch.
