It’s pleasing to know Chilton County cares a great deal about whom it elects to public office. The probate office released numbers indicating a much higher voter turnout than was expected for Tuesday’s Republican primary runoff.

Out of the 26,000 registered voters in the county, almost 8,000 showed up at 18 precincts spread throughout Clanton, Jemison, Thorsby, Isabella, Maplesville and Verbena. Probate Judge Bobby Martin said the turnout was higher than he anticipated.

Speaking with various residents in our office along with reading the many online comments on our website suggest a spirited and healthy dialogue among those with the power to elect, which is essential for a community. People are making conscious efforts to become educated on candidates and issues before casting their ever-important ballots.

Given we have roughly four months until the general election in November – when Democrats, Republicans and Independents finally get to square off – we still have time not only to learn more about each individual seeking office but also to register if we haven’t.

If you have yet to do so, take a trip to the Board of Registrar’s office in the Chilton County courthouse to fill out the necessary paperwork that gives you a voice and the opportunity to make a difference.

Once you do that and you’ve read any information you need to know about the candidates, you’re good to go, and we can continue to increase those high turnout numbers.

Of course, voting is a right, a privilege and, most importantly, a choice. While it’s crucial that citizens exercise their right and reinforce the power and value of a democracy, it should neither be a burden or obligation for those uncomfortable with it. Nobody wants to regret casting a ballot, and sometimes that’s unavoidable. Again, take time to learn as much as possible about the candidates, register at the courthouse and make sure you get out there on Nov. 3 to make your presence known.
