Veggie meeting is Friday

The Chilton Area Vegetable Production Meeting will be held this Friday, March 26 at the Alabama Power Company building in Clanton from 8:30 a.m. until noon.

Topics and speakers include the following:

Getting Paid What Its Worth — Optimizing Seedless Watermelon Production — Dr. Joe Kemble, extension specialist

Asparagus Production for Local Markets — Arnold Caylor, superintendent, North Alabama Horticulture Research Center

Tomato Production Update — Dan Porch, county extension coordinator, Blount County

A New Look at Older Watermelon Varieties — Mike Reeves, regional extension agent

Southern Pea Production — Doug Chapman, regional extension agent

Overview of High Tunnel Vegetable Production — Chip East, regional extension agent

Controlling Fungal Diseases of Cucurbits — Gary Gray, regional extension agent, commercial horticulture.

The meeting will be an excellent opportunity for vegetable growers to learn more about vegetable production, pest management and recommended varieties. 2010 Vegetable Production Handbooks will be available at the meeting.

This meeting is sponsored by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and the Alabama Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association. It is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
