The driver of a truck involved in a head-on collision Monday night has been charged with felony DUI and felony assault first degree.

John Wesley Stewart, 30, of Clanton is being held in the Chilton County Jail with possibly more charges pending, the Clanton Police Department reports.

The mid-size pickup truck Stewart was driving collided with an SUV on Alabama Highway 22 West near LeCroy Career/Technical Center about 9:45 p.m. Monday, sending Stewart and four others including two children to the hospital.

The four other victims were all riding in the SUV.

“In my opinion, looking at the pictures and everything, everybody is lucky to be alive,” Clanton Police Detective Freddie Mayfield said.

The family in the SUV was reportedly from the Maplesville area. One of the children, a girl, had been released from Children’s Hospital as of Wednesday afternoon. Two of the adult victims were thought to be undergoing surgery, Mayfield said.

Injuries appeared to be non-life-threatening, both Mayfield and Clanton Fire Chief David Driver said.

Due to the possibility of additional charges pending, Stewart’s bond had not been set as of Wednesday.
