Maplesville eighth-grader Neal Ousley likes to explore historical facts, but he also likes to explore the off-road on his dirt bike.
When Neal is in the classroom, historical figures seem to pique his interest more than anything else.
“I like learning about what our ancestors did,” he said.
Neal’s older brother, Cliff, started racing dirt bikes at age 10. It was easy for Neal to become interested in racing, and he has competed in races in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee.
“I just grew up wanting to ride,” he said.
In January, he won the Vet Kids 2009 race in Philadelphia, Miss., receiving a helmet for his efforts.
Neal’s bike is a Yamaha YZ 250.
The Maplesville honor student is on the Junior Beta Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and plays center on the football team. He also plays baseball and basketball for Maplesville.
After graduation, Neal wants to attend the University of Alabama and pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. He said he would like to work in small engine repair and maintenance.
“I just always liked working on engines and trying to get them running,” he said.
Neal is the son of Charles and Pam Ousley and also has a sister, Julie.
