Former Clanton police officer Rex Cleckler was sworn in Thursday as Chilton County’s next tax assessor.

Surrounded by his family, Cleckler was given the oath of office from Probate Judge Bobby Martin. He was joined by his wife, Amy; daughters, Savannah and Addison; and mother and stepfather, Ken and Myra Northcutt.

“It’s a lifelong dream of mine. It’s been a lot of hard work, a lot of long hours,” Cleckler said when thanking his supporters. “…Everyone who supported me in this election, I appreciate everything you’ve done.”

The new tax assessor narrowly defeated Tom Powers in last November’s general election. Powers was appointed to finish the term of Circuit Clerk Glenn McGriff, who resigned the post after being elected to his current office.

Cleckler said he was inspired to get into politics by his father, the late County Commissioner Wayne Cleckler.

“I watched how he served and it gave me inspiration,” said Cleckler. “I want to continue that service.”

Cleckler said he would have an open door policy.

“If there is something I can help you with, come into my office, and I’ll try to help you,” said Cleckler. “If I can’t, I’ll try to direct you to someone who can.”
