Thorsby kids grow colossal cabbages

Two Thorsby elementary students recently participated in Bonnie Plant Farm’s third grade cabbage program. Karly Davis and Cole Hight were two of several students who received a free cabbage plant to grow in their late spring gardens.
Each year, Bonnie Plant Farm distributes free cabbage plants to third graders across the country to foster an interest in gardening and the environment. Cabbages are delivered to students whose teachers have signed up to participate. Students in these third-grade classrooms each get their own cabbage to plant, take care of and harvest. The cabbages produce oversized heads, making the process even more exciting for kids. As part of the program, Bonnie awards a $1,000 scholarship to one student in each state.
The students were responsible for maintaining records of their plant’s growth and care by keeping track of how often the plant was watered, fertilized and even how often the garden was weeded. Once the students harvested their cabbages, they reported an ample supply of coleslaw, boiled cabbage and stir-fried cabbage for their families.
