The Chilton County Commission approved the 2009-2010 budget 6-1 Monday night, with Commissioner Joe Headley opposing.

Commission chairman Tim Mims said this year’s budget was the first he had voted in favor of in more than 10 years.

“It appears that we’re going to make it through the year without borrowing any money,” Mims said. “It’s been years since we’ve done that, but hopefully next year will be the same.”

The new budget, initially estimated at about $15 million, does not incorporate the 8-percent cuts made during the current fiscal year. It incorporates level funding for the Sheriff’s Department but includes cuts for several departments, Commissioner Allen Caton indicated.
